It’s easy to feel left out and left behind when you can’t afford to attend your high school prom. But, that’s the sad reality for many students. The average price tag for prom attire, hair, makeup and a ride to the big dance is about $1600! In spite of that steep price tag, a Central Texas foundation has been making prom dreams come true for local teens.
PROMRACK is the signature event of The Write To Me Foundation launched by businesswoman and civic leader, Gigi Edwards Bryant in 2004. “I started PROMRACK to address rite-of-passage events that are often overlooked throughout the foster care system”. Gigi survived a tumultuous childhood in foster care and wanted to make sure children and young adults in the system had the resources they needed to celebrate vital, uplifting milestones.
Since it started more than two decades ago, PROMRACK has expanded beyond the foster care system and now serves high-schoolers from across Central Texas. Over the years, more than 46,000 students have been able to take advantage of free prom attire thanks to donations, dedicated volunteers and sponsors.
During this prom season's big shopping day, students were greeted by personal shoppers to find the perfect formalwear and accessories. There were more than 1500 dresses to choose from sizes 00-54. Everyone left with beautiful prom outfits and big smiles on their faces.
