"Every time I came to camp, it was the only seven days I knew I’d have a safe place to sleep and three meals a day. Just the foundation of safety and home was built at this camp." ~ Evening Hackett
Those are the words of Evening Hackett. Today, she is a 23-year-old college graduate and a dedicated English teacher. But during her childhood—when her family faced homelessness and the uncertainty of government housing—Austin Sunshine Camps was her sanctuary.
Evening never truly left. She transitioned from camper to counselor-in-training, assistant director, and now, she spends her summers returning to Central Texas to mentor the next generation.
"I gained so many social skills, independent skills… things I couldn't gain in foster care or being homeless—I gained here," Evening says. "And I also just gained a second home."
Evening’s journey is a beautiful reflection of a mission that has been quietly transforming our community for nearly a century.

A Healing History in Zilker Park
Nearly 100 years ago, in 1928, the Young Men’s Business League of Austin recognized a severe threat facing local youth: tuberculosis. Believing that fresh air and open skies could promote healing, they established Austin Sunshine Camps right in the heart of Zilker Park. It became a dedicated space where economically disadvantaged children could gain strength, grow healthy, and simply enjoy the outdoors. While the medical threats of the 1920s have faded into history, the need for a safe, uplifting environment for Central Texas children remains just as urgent.
Removing the Barrier of Cost
Today, ASC continues to serve young people living near or below the poverty line, as well as children in the foster care system. It stands out as one of the only overnight camp experiences in Central Texas that is 100% free of charge for families on free or reduced lunch.
By removing the financial barrier, ASC gives kids the freedom to look beyond their current circumstances and dream big.

Whether they are 8-11 year olds staying at the beautiful Zilker Lodge or 12-15 year olds sleeping under the stars in rustic cabins out at Lake Travis (Turkey Bend Recreation Area), these campers are stepping into a world of pure magic. From specialized afternoon tracks like Culinary Arts and Outdoor Adventure to high-energy team competitions, camp life is packed with unforgettable milestones.
More Than Summer Fun: Building a Future
For kids who might otherwise never have the opportunity, ASC introduces them to the thrill of ziplining, canoeing, and kayaking. But the real takeaway happens beneath the surface.
Through the adventures of overnight camp, these kids build:
Self-confidence and independence
Friendships and conflict-resolution skills
A deep appreciation for diversity and teamwork
As Evening so beautifully puts it: "The youth that come here would never be able to experience the things they experience here... Being able to see the kids let loose here—it’s amazing."
