Gone for Good

What if you could turn unwanted belongings into a big donation to your favorite cause? The Austin nonprofit Gone for Good makes that happen. Their motto is, “Selling worldly treasures to do a world of good.”

Co-founded 16 years ago by Gail Miller, Gone for Good relies on dozens of dedicated volunteers. No one makes any money because the profits from their estate sales, and other donated items, go to the charities of the donor’s choosing.

The volunteers love this work and consider it a way to transform their passion for estate sales into purpose. Lois Banning started volunteering 5 years ago after buying a dining room table at a Gone for Good sale. She says, “It’s more than volunteering. It’s about friendships. We are a family.”

It’s also a heartfelt gift for the people who make the choice to turn former family treasures into money for their favorite nonprofits. Most of the items at a recent estate sale at a home in Northwest Austin benefited the Settlement Club Home and Hospice Austin.

One of the daughters of the late homeowners says, “My parents were very philanthropic. Partnering with Gone for Good was a fitting way to honor them and benefit charities our family cares about.”

She also loves the idea of her parents' belongings getting a second life and bringing joy to others.
